The “Verkhovel“ hotel is located right in the centre of the capital of the Hutsul region — Verkhovyna.
We stayed in a junior suite in the new building. The room turned out to be very comfortable and well equipped. Contrary to some reviews, we had a minibar-type fridge, as well as everything we needed: a comfortable bed, a sofa, a table, air conditioning, a kettle with cups and tea bags. In the wardrobe there were a safe, bathrobes, slippers and even a shoehorn.
In the bathroom — a shower, a toilet, a set of towels (5 for the two of us), soap, shampoo, shower gel, shower caps and even toothbrush kits.
Location
The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Verkhovyna. A 5-minute walk away is the market (open on weekdays until roughly 13:00–14:00). Right behind the hotel there is a canteen where you can eat cheaply, but it is ordinary home cooking without any sophistication.
Across the road is the “Ukrainochka” restaurant. I recommend trying the fried potatoes with garlic there — they really are delicious! The other dishes impressed us less: too much wine sauce, the borscht was bland, and the sausage was served with beetroot instead of horseradish without any warning.
We also went to the “Magurka” restaurant (a 10–15 minute walk). The borscht with cracklings was tasty there, but the dining room was stuffy and there were flies.
The museums near the hotel deserve a separate mention: the Hutsul Region Museum, the corkscrew museum (although it feels more like a tasting session to sell wine than a real museum), the museum of magic and other interesting places.
The “Panorama” restaurant
On the top floor of the Verkhovel there is the “Panorama” restaurant. Every morning from 9:00 to 11:30 it serves buffet breakfasts, which are included in the room rate. The choice of dishes is varied and the food is replenished quickly, so it is impossible to stay hungry.
After 12:00 the restaurant works à la carte. Our impressions are mixed: the borscht was less tasty than at an ordinary petrol station, but the blood sausage, although it resembled “hrechanka” (buckwheat sausage) more, was excellently cooked. The bograch is tasty, but not quite what you expect. The plate of salo was wonderful, but we had to ask for bread separately. The smoked meat platter was a bit of a letdown — the meat was rather dry.
Service and spa
The room was cleaned well, but for some reason rather late — around 16:00–17:00. The reception staff are always friendly and helpful, although they confused us a little about the spa opening hours (we were told several times that it opened at 11:00, but it turned out to be 16:00).
The spa is included in the price: there is an indoor pool, a hammam, a Finnish sauna, showers and a Kneipp contrast path. The jacuzzi, unfortunately, works at half power. The new building has an outdoor pool (9:00–24:00) with a bar. For an extra fee you can book a massage (a standard 1-hour massage costs 900 UAH).
Parking
The “Verkhovel” hotel has its own car park with a barrier. There are few spaces, and even if you put out a cone, your spot may be taken. That is what happened to us after we returned from Hoverla. It is worth knowing that the hotel grounds close at midnight, and to open the barrier before 9:00 you have to look for the security guard. So sometimes it is easier to leave the car in the free car park nearby.
✅ Overall our impressions are positive: a modern hotel in the centre of Verkhovyna with good conditions, a spa and a panoramic restaurant. It has its small drawbacks, but the atmosphere of the Hutsul region, the friendly staff and the comfortable rooms make for a pleasant stay.
