Hoverla is the highest peak in Ukraine, standing 2,061 m above sea level. It is located in the Chornohora range of the Carpathians, on the border of the Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions.
Interesting facts
🏔️ The name “Hoverla” probably comes from the Hungarian word “hóvár” — “snowy peak” — or the Romanian “hover” — “a place that is hard to pass”.
🌲 The slopes are covered with dense coniferous forests (spruce, fir), and higher up stretch subalpine meadows — polonyny — where countless mountain herbs bloom in summer.
💧 This is where the Prut River and a number of tributaries of the Tisza begin.
🚶 Climbing to the summit requires no mountaineering skills, but it is physically quite exhausting. On average it takes 3–5 hours. The most popular routes start from the Zarosliak tourist base and from the Kozmeshchyk meadow.
🗿 At the summit there is a large cross, the flag of Ukraine and memorial signs. In clear weather a breathtaking view opens up over the entire Chornohora ridge and the neighbouring peaks — Petros, Rebra, Pop Ivan.
Our route
We started the route from the Zarosliak tourist base, which we reached by car from Verkhovyna, from the “Verkhovel” hotel. There are several official trails on Mount Hoverla:
green — considered easy,
blue — of medium difficulty,
red — the hardest.
We chose to go up the blue trail and come down the green one. And honestly: the green one did not seem easy at all. The trail runs along a stream, so the ground there is wet, rocky and slippery. The blue one, although rocky too, is drier and more comfortable for the ascent.
What you must take with you to Hoverla
✔️ A comfortable backpack (about 30 l)
✔️ Water — at least 1 l, better 1.5 l
✔️ Good footwear — preferably hiking boots, waterproof
✔️ Trekking poles (they help a lot; you can rent them at Zarosliak)
✔️ A raincoat
✔️ A light windproof jacket
✔️ Sunglasses, a cap, sunscreen
✔️ A phone and an action camera (fully charged)
✔️ A first-aid kit (elastic bandage, painkillers, personal medication)
✔️ Snacks (sandwiches, energy bars)
✔️ Money 💰
✔️ And most importantly — a good mood 😊
Useful tips
🔹 Near the start there is a small market: you can buy water, food, souvenirs or rent equipment there.
🔹 At the summit they also sell tea, coffee, water and even small souvenirs. That is exactly why you will definitely need money.
🔹 There are no springs along the blue trail, so you can only top up your water supply at the bottom.
🔹 There is also a toilet near the start — further up there will be hardly any opportunities.
🔹 Go at your own pace: not too fast, but not too slow either. There is no need to adjust to others — that wears you out.
🔹 A guided tour is not necessary: there are always plenty of groups with guides around, so you can hear the explanations anyway while staying independent in your pace and rest stops.
A hike up Hoverla is not only a physical challenge but also an incredible opportunity to see the beauty of the Carpathians with your own eyes. And everyone who climbs to its summit takes a piece of this grandeur with them in their heart. ❤️
