The tasty Czech Republic. For me it turned out to be tasty in two ways at once: I love good food and I love good beer. And these two things came together in this country. At our hotel, ABE HOTEL, reception called a guide for us who, besides the excursions, marked all the tastiest bars on a map of Prague for us. Thanks to him for that.
On this map you can make out circles with numbers (drawn in pen). The circles are pubs, and the number in each shows how many different kinds of beer that pub offers. In most cases these pubs are microbreweries offering their own beer.
I won’t dwell on breakfasts: they were normal for European countries and I have already described them in my article about the ABE HOTEL.
Lunch. We didn’t always have lunch — mostly on excursions, or quick bites at fast-food places, for example McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and others. I don’t see much point in dwelling on that either. On excursions the food is so-so, mostly at an extra charge, and sometimes there’s no food at all.
But for dinner we went to various places, including a pub from the map above. The tasty Czech Republic is not just beer, but also the most delicious dishes. We really liked the restaurant “Restaurace Historie“. There we tried the most tender roast duck with cabbage, potato pancakes and potato dumplings — the meat simply melts in your mouth. We also really liked the equally tender pork ribs and tasty beer snacks: crisps, cheese crisps, onion rings and fish chips, all complemented by tasty sauces. We also tried the most delicious ribeye steaks and a pork steak with mushroom sauce. In this restaurant we also discovered “Kofola” — a drink very similar to cola but made to Czech recipes, and quite tasty. All in all, we were very happy with this restaurant, and you can see its full menu on their website.
Loď Pivovar — this little restaurant with its own microbrewery is located on a small boat. Here we tried “Vepřové koleno“, i.e. our pork knuckle. If there are two of you and the waiter asks “Just one?” when you order the “vepřové koleno“, say yes. The two of us couldn’t finish it, and what would have happened if we’d ordered 2 is anyone’s guess. It weighs around 1,200–1,400 grams. But it’s worth trying — it’s very tasty and filling. Two or even three people can eat their fill from it.
And what about the TV tower with a restaurant at the top and the most beautiful cocktail presentation. We didn’t want to eat there because of the unusually high prices, but the presentation and the view are divine. A little above the restaurant there is also a lovely 360° observation deck.
Not far from the TV tower is my favourite pub, BeerGeek. Why did it become my favourite? It’s simple: it has 44 kinds of beer and tasty snacks. They also have tasting sets of 5 glasses of 150 ml. You can see the menu on their website.
My second favourite pub was nubeerbar; the snacks are also decent here, and there are as many as 22 kinds of beer.
In the other cafés, bars and restaurants it was just as tasty — they’re all marked on the map above. For example, in one café we ordered beef tartare; it only looks small, but it actually comes with buttered toast and is hard to finish. And on one of the excursions I ordered a venison steak — honestly, I didn’t like it much; the taste was sweetish.
All in all, the tasty Czech Republic was a success, filling my belly not only with the most delicious food but also with the most delicious beer.
