The GURU hotel became our home in the second tastiest country of our travels — Georgia. As always, we prepared for our flight to this country, and every time I read about Georgia my mouth was watering. Every comment, description or article about Georgia had at least one photo or a brief mention of food. Even now, remembering this country, my mouth starts to water.
After landing at the airport and going through all the checks, we were met with a sign bearing our name. Although our transfer wasn’t private but a standard one, we had the minibus to ourselves. The standard scare stories about excursions and “only buy from us”. And at last we arrived at the hotel. We were checked in quickly, on the 4th floor, considering that we arrived at 10 in the morning.
We chose the GURU hotel based on the experience of our previous trips. We only sleep and shower in the room, so we chose a cheap hotel.
In the room, large panoramic windows looked out over the beautiful city. Although the hotel representatives had written to me that there was a safe in the room, there wasn’t one. The room is very small: if you open 1 suitcase, it is practically impossible to get from the entrance to the bathroom. Quietness in the rooms is mediocre — there is no soundproofing, and you can hear people talking in other rooms, walking about, opening and closing doors. Good internet, with no problems picking it up anywhere in and around the hotel, at a good speed. When you leave your room, there’s a terrace on every floor where you can sit at a table and have a drink or a bite and breathe the wonderful fresh mountain air.
Service. Everything in the room was very clean; it was cleaned every day, towels were changed daily, and the bed linen every 2–3 days. We left both gadgets and fairly expensive belongings, and everything stayed in its place. If anything, things were sometimes put away more neatly than before. At reception everyone always smiled and always said hello. If we had questions, they always tried to help and advise where the food was tastier, where to see folk dances, what to see in the city and what to try.
Breakfast. This was a shock for us. We didn’t expect a breakfast like in an all-inclusive Turkish hotel at a cheap hotel. But Georgia is famous for its cuisine! And yet breakfast offered a “huge” choice consisting of bread, 1 kind of tasteless sausage, 1 kind of tasteless cheese, tasteless frankfurters, ordinary boiled eggs and cheap tea/coffee ☕️. So we only went to breakfast twice, and after that we paid for breakfast in other cafés.
Location. The GURU hotel is located at 21 Likhauri St, 0160 Tbilisi, Georgia. The hotel stands on a steep slope, so bear that in mind, because you’ll have to climb up to the hotel every day. The hotel also has steep stairs between floors, which doesn’t add any comfort after climbing the steep slope. From the hotel to the metro station (Technical University) is about 1.5 km. We didn’t use the minibuses or buses, so we walked to the metro station. To the city centre (Avlabari station) it’s 2 stops on one metro line and 4 stops on the other. It took us about 40–60 minutes to get from the hotel to Avlabari station. The cafés and restaurants are mostly in the centre; there are few near the hotel. Almost everywhere we ate, the food was very tasty — but that’s a completely different story.
